Sadie Hodgson – Owner, Jeweller & Silversmithing Tutor

“I’m Sadie, Cornwall’s original Sea Glass silversmith. With 12 years in the industry, jewellery is my world.

I’m incredibly excited to share my experiences and to pass on the love and joy that creating your own wearable treasure can bring!

Sustainability is at the heart of my work, I’m passionate about environmentally conscious practises, removing traditional animal products from the manufacturing process and using recycled materials.

I can’t wait to help ignite the passion of future generations of makers.”

Gemma Lessinger – Art Tutor

Gemma is a multi-talented artist, specialising in textural seascapes using recycled materials.

Gemma’s remarkable work is celebrated all over the world and has recently had a mind blowing 15m x 9m mural of her ‘Fistral Blues’ installed in the UK’s first Spaceport in Cornwall.

“I paint to express how it makes me feel and that is what I will help you to do in my workshops. With the added benefit of re-purposing and up-cycling, you will learn how to create a textured art piece, focusing on an aerial view of the Cornish Shoreline.”

Jewellery making Hot Benching

Once a course has been completed (or if you’re demonstrably familiar with the equipment already), you will be able to hire 1 of 4 available silversmithing benches – fully equipped with tools included – for a day rate of £20.

This enables students to continue their learning and develop their skills independently without investing in their own tools and equipment.

Reviews

“Sadie patiently and kindly guided us through the whole process with clear instruction and supportive encouragement – nothing was too much trouble as far as she was concerned”

“What a fascinating and creative experience we’ve just had at The Sea Glass Studio. Sadie was so welcoming and helpful as my daughter (18) and I joined a workshop and proceeded to learn the art of Stacking Rings”

“Highly recommended: In our class we learned the skills needed to make rings out of copper, and then progressed to the ‘real thing’ using Sterling Silver. Neither of us have any previous experience. We were both extremely happy and proud of our achievements and impressed by Sadie’s patience!”

A moment of colourful calm – Painting Workshop

Creative Re-purposing – Painting workshop: A moment of colourful calm

Words by Gemma Lessinger

This short course will last approx. 3 hours.

Your tutor is: Gemma Lessinger

Whether you have painted before or have never even picked up a paintbrush, I will guide you to paint and just let your creativity flow. You may think you don’t have a creative bone in your body, but I believe art can be a release for our emotions and stresses, it doesn’t have to look like something that will hang in an art gallery.

As part of this session you will have the chance to either use a classic canvas or a piece of driftwood, salvaged from the Cornish shoreline for you to paint on. Re-purposing something direct from the ocean. I encourage you to bring along any items, such as sea glass, fabric, shells, beach plastic, sand from your favourite beach, things that may be headed to landfill, to see how we can re-purpose them into art.

The Process:

I will have four reference images for you to use; two ocean scenes and two sunset scenes. Each giving you different colour palettes and shapes to work with. You can chose which one you would like to focus on.

What do you want to express? Perhaps use the reference image to remind you of your favourite beach, or do you want to use colour and texture to express a feeling. You are more than welcome to bring along a photo of a special place for inspiration.

It wouldn’t be a Gemma Lessinger workshop if we didn’t repurpose, so I will have either a classic canvas or a large piece of repurposed driftwood for you to work on.

Throughout the workshop I want you to feel that you can express what you feel, as such I am just there as a guide to show you my process and how I re-purpose.  You can be a complete beginner to an experienced artist wanting to learn something new.

All materials will be supplied, but please do bring along anything you’d like to re-purpose into your piece. Nothing is too crazy here – if you aren’t sure just contact me before hand.

Additional info:

You will need to leave your painting at the studio to dry, as they take 24-48 hours to dry off because of all the texture. Postage to you after the workshop can be arranged.

You will come away with a little surprise at the end too!

Let’s make magic together…

“I re-ignited my painting journey during the first lockdown in Covid 19, being forced to pause from the noise of modern life and having nothing to do. I still don’t know what made me reach for my old canvases and dried up paint set, but when I did it was a release.”

“It brought me solace during the unprecedented event we were in, and without me thinking or knowing why I started painting the ocean. I now realise I painted it because it calms me, soothes me when I am feeling stressed and at that time I could not reach it. So, I painted that feeling it gave me.”

“It is so hard to just stop these days, we are constantly running around, working to the point of exhaustion, over stimulated by our phones and social media. We never stop. My aim in this workshop is to get you to do just that, to have a moment of freedom from life’s daily stresses. To connect to your deepest creative self, to stop and intuitively let go and be free.”
